The Value of Prayer

 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be an abomination (Proverbs 28:9)

How important and valuable is prayer?.....Well, consider this....

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to YAHWEH: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

YAHWEH is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous (Proverbs 15:8, 29)

One may ask, exactly how and when should we pray?

  • For starters, pray toward our land Jerusalem (East of the USA), the city where YAHWEH has placed his name

King Solomon said to YAHWEH, If the Childern of YisraEl return unto thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away captive, and pray unto thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I [King Solomon] have built for thy name: Then hear thou their prayer and their supplication in heaven thy dwelling place, and maintain their cause, And forgive thy people that have sinned against thee, and all their transgressions wherein they have transgressed against thee, and give them compassion before them who carried them captive, that they may have compassion on them: For they be thy people, and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest forth out of Egypt [i.e., the house of bondage/slavery], from the midst of the furnace of iron: That thine eyes may be open unto the supplication of thy servant, and unto the supplication of thy people YisraEl, to hearken unto them in all that they call for unto thee. For thou didst separate them from among all the people of the earth, to be thine inheritance, as thou spakest by the hand of Moses thy servant, when thou broughtest our fathers out of Egypt, O YAHWEH Elohim (1 Kings 8:44-45; 48-53).

And now, O Elohim of YisraEl, let thy word, I pray thee, be verified, which thou spakest unto thy servant [King] David my father. But will Elohim indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded? Have respect therefore to the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O YAHWEH my Elohim, to hearken unto the cry and the prayer which thy servant prayeth before thee:  That thine eyes may be open upon this house [that I built in Jerusalem] day and night, upon the place whereof thou hast said that thou wouldest put thy name there; to hearken unto the prayer which thy servant prayeth toward this place. Hearken therefore unto the supplications of thy servant, and of thy people YisraEl, which they shall make toward this place: hear thou from thy dwelling place, even from heaven; and when thou hearest, forgive (1 Kings 8:26-30; 2 Chronicles 6:19-21).

When thy people YisraEl be smitten down before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and confess thy name, and pray, and make supplication unto thee in this house: Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people YisraEl, and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest unto their fathers. When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against thee; if they pray toward this place, and confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou afflictest them: Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people YisraEl, that thou teach them the good way wherein they should walk, and give rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance. If there be in the land famine, if there be pestilence, blasting, mildew, locust, or if there be caterpiller; if their enemy besiege them in the land of their cities; whatsoever plague, whatsoever sickness there be;  What prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people YisraEl, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house: Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;) (1 Kings 8:33-39).

Now when [King] Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of YAHWEH filled the house. And the priests could not enter into the house of YisraEl, because the glory of YAHWEH had filled YAHWEH's house. And when all the Children of YisraEl saw...the glory of YAHWEH upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised YAHWEH, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever (2 Chronicles 7:1-3).

  • Consider a core Hebrew prayer communicated to the Children of YisraEl by Moses

Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which YAHWEH your Elohim commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: That thou mightest fear YAHWEH thy Elohim, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which he command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged. Hear therefore, O YisraEl, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as YAHWEH Elohim of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

Hear, O YisraEl: YAHWEH our Elohim is one YAHWEH:
 And thou shalt love YAHWEH thy Elohim with all thine heart,

and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children,

and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house,

and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand,

and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
And it shall be, when YAHWEH thy Elohim shall have brought thee into the land

which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob,

to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,

And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not,

and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees,

which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;

Then beware lest thou forget YAHWEH, which brought thee forth

out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

Thou shalt fear YAHWEH thy Elohim, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

Ye shall not go after other dieties, of the dieties of the people which are round about you;

(For YAHWEH thy Elohim is a jealous Elohim among you)

lest the anger of YAHWEH thy Elohim be kindled against thee,

and destroy thee from off the face of the earth. Ye shall not tempt YAHWEH your Elohim,

as ye tempted him in Massah [i.e., the wilderness].

Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of YAHWEH your Elohim,

and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee.

And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of YAHWEH:

that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess

the good land which YAHWEH sware unto thy fathers,

To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as YAHWEH hath spoken.

And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies,

and the statutes, and the judgments, which YAHWEH our Elohim hath commanded you?

Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt;

and YAHWEH brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand:

And YAHWEH shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh,

and upon all his household, before our eyes: And he brought us out from thence,

that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.

And YAHWEH commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear YAHWEH our Elohim,

for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.

And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments

before YAHWEH our Elohim, as he hath commanded us

(Deuteronomy 6:1-25).

  • Consider the words of our leader King David, as it relates to prayer

King David said to YAHWEH, Give ear to my words, O YAHWEH, consider my meditation. Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my Elohim: for unto thee will I pray. My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O YAHWEH; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up (Psalm 5:1-3).

King David said to the people of YisraEl, Come and hear, all ye that fear Elohim, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul. I cried unto him with my mouth, and he was extolled with my tongue. If I regard iniquity in my heart, YAHWEH will not hear me: But verily Elohim hath heard me; he hath attended to the voice of my prayer. Blessed be Elohim, which hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me (Psalm 66:16-20).

  • Consider the prayer YAHWEH's Prophet Nehemiah once made

O YAHWEH Elohim of heaven, the great and terrible Elohim, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I (Nehemiah) pray before thee now, day and night, for the Children of YisraEl thy servants, and confess the sins of the Children of YisraEl, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned. We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses. Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations: But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there. Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand. O YAHWEH, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name (Nehemiah 1:1-11).

  • Consider the actions of YAHWEH's Prophet Ezekiel, as it relates to the words he spoke to YAHWEH

And it came to pass, that when the Prophet Ezekiel prophesied, he fell down upon his face, and cried with a loud voice, and said, Ah YAHWEH ELOHIM! wilt thou make a full end of the remnant of YisraEl?  And YAHWEH said unto himSon of man, thy brethren, even thy brethren, the men of thy kindred, and all the house of YisraEl wholly, are they unto whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, Get you far from YAHWEH: unto us is this land given in possession?... Although I have cast them far off among the heathen, and although I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come....I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of YisraEl. And they shall come thither, and they shall take away all the detestable things thereof and all the abominations thereof from thence. And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh: That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their Elohim. But as for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will recompense their way upon their own heads, saith YAHWEH Elohim (Ezekiel 11:13-21).

  • Lastly, consider the prayer YAHWEH's Prophet Daniel once made

Now, the Prophet Daniel...he kneeled upon his knees three (3) times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his Elohim (Daniel 6:10). He would...set his face, pray and make confession unto YAHWEH Elohim. See one of his prayers below:

O YAHWEH, the great and dreadful [i.e., awesome, wonderful] Elohim,

keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him,

and to them that keep his commandments;

We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled,

even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:

Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name

to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

O YAHWEH, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces,

as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

and unto all YisraEl, that are near,

and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them,

because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.

O YAHWEH, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes,

and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.

To YAHWEH our Elohim belong mercies and forgivenesses,

though we have rebelled against him;

Neither have we obeyed the voice of YAHWEH our Elohim,

to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

Yea, all YisraEl have transgressed thy law,

even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice;

therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath

that is written in the law of Moses the servant of Elohim,

because we have sinned against him. And he hath confirmed his words,

which he spake against us,

and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil:

for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem.

As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us:

yet made we not our prayer before YAHWEH our Elohim,

that we might turn from our iniquities,

and understand thy truth.

Therefore hath YAHWEH watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us:

for YAHWEH our Elohim is righteous in all his works which he doeth:

for we obeyed not his voice.

And now, O YAHWEH our Elohim, that hast brought thy people forth

out of the land of Egypt [i.e., the house of bondage/slavery] with a mighty hand,

and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day;

we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

O YAHWEH, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee,

let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem,

thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers,

Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.

Now therefore, O our Elohim, hear the prayer of thy servant,

and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate,

for YAHWEH's sake. O my Elohim, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes,

and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name:

for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses,

but for thy great mercies. O YAHWEH, hear; O YAHWEH, forgive;

O YAHWEH, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake,

O my Elohim: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name (Daniel 9:3-19).

Thus saith YAHWEH:

If my people,

which are called by my name,

shall humble themselves,

and pray, and seek my face,

and turn from their wicked ways;

then will I hear from heaven,

and will forgive their sin,

and will heal their land

(2 Chronicles 7:14).

If you are unsure of what to pray or how to pray,

follow the aforementioned examples or say the prayer(s) given above and you will be on the right path.
